An Interview with Peter J. Sheehan

What were the circumstances of your life before you had the dream revealing that the ocean is the truth? I was in a working situation with partners in a business endeavor and we were not communicating very well. I was very frustrated on why we were not communicating, I just didn’t get it. And I’ve been frustrated in the past with my dyslexia, dysgraphia thing (a severe form of dyslexia), and I just wasn’t understanding. I felt like I was trying to communicate, but I was not getting through. So I tried to think each night, is there some sort of system or way that we could both communicate, that we could see eye to eye? Have some sort of baseline so to speak. So I’d say a little prayer every night and go to sleep. Then, about a week before I had the dream, I went out and bought a bunch of yellow legal pads and pens for some reason. I was just out in the store and I saw all these little yellow notepads and I bought them and a bunch of pens. I don’t know why. It was a bit unusual for me because I don’t write much with my dyslexia. And they were in my room that night. I went to sleep that night and it came to me, that the ocean is the truth, that’s the only thing I remember about the dream, The—ocean—is—the—truth.

How long did it take you to figure out what the dream meant?

I think that I knew instantly what it meant. So I got out a yellow notepad and just started writing. And maybe that’s why the dream was given to me. I understood in the basic fiber of who I was, the implication of three words, “Ocean is truth.” Now, over the next year, I wrote, and I went to a writing course and spoke to an English teacher at my high school. Someone that can write says you just have to do it, and continue to do it. But I always had that little secret and I didn’t even discover until I was 50 that it had a name, it’s called dysgraphia. It’s the inability to connect in addition to the dyslexia part. But I continued to write.

Explain your system

You have to picture yourself as a boat on the ocean. And where is that boat? Get a good clear picture, where is it right now in your life. Is it lost in the fog? Is it on the shoals, or going around in circles? Are you on the rocks? Everyone cam get a very clear picture of it. You’ve got to find out exactly where it is. Once you establish where it is, then there is the means to go in a different direction if you like or if you feel you’re on course, you can continue to fine tune it and make it a successful journey. And you can tell what’s going on by what the ocean is doing to your little vessel. The ocean reveals the truth. It took me about seven or eight years in talking to people to realize that I couldn’t just say, “The ocean is the truth.” People kept giving me these blank stares. And in my mind it was very clear. But in reality I needed a better vocabulary to describe it. So I call it the three R’s. The ocean represents, reveals and reflects the truth. You can substitute either one of those three words for “is”. It’s very simple. The second chapter is about sea sickness. There are indications given to us all the time. The bible says we have eyes but don’t see and ears but we don’t listen. So often there are signs in front of us, all the time but we choose not to see them. It would be the same as going out in the ocean and coming in to a harbor knowing there is going to be a big rocky shore and pounding surf and ignoring the flashing markers, the skeletons of old boats on the shoals…these are warning signs. They say, “Let’s precede slowly through here. Let’s get some knowledge before we just jump in and do something.”

How can your system be practically applied to today's challenges, say, a teenager gets pregnant and she has to decide whether to keep the baby or not?

I actually proposed different questions to myself as I was writing the book and I tried to think, “How could I tell the truth, how do I know what the truth really is? How do I get a handle on it?” And when your faced with a difficult decision, how do you know what the truth is when your grasping for answers? I believe everyone is independent, from the moment of conception you are a separate being, a separate boat as it were, on the ocean, you as a person. And if it is a teenage girl for example, she’s got her little boat and she’s out and having a good ole’ time and doing what teenagers do. And all of a sudden, she is possibly faced with a big storm, maybe the first big storm of her little voyage. She’s had her parents dictate her life and tell her what to do, but from birth you are a fully equipped boat. You learn and add equipment but she is out there with her fully equipped boat and what should she do? The simply answer is in this situation, if you had a lifeboat on your boat, would you discard that lifeboat if you felt the storm is too great and felt like you had to get rid of some of the equipment on the boat? You make a decision, would you cut that lifeboat to get your boat in a better condition. The baby is the lifeboat. I’m envisioning someday, some little girl walking up to me and saying “Look at my child, this is my little lifeboat.” And that is how I formulated this particular process. Some people will do what ever it takes. And the point is if you are sinking you have to step into your dingy. And possibly, if you decide to keep it that literally will be your saving grace. You don’t know if later on in life if it will be. To look at him or her and say,” You are just so beautiful.” But I’m not going to judge you, some people need to do what they have to do. It’s not a question of judgment, she’s the captain of her ship, it’s her decision. And every decision has consequences no matter what. I think in any situation knowledge is very important. Before you use the knowledge, always start off with a sense of humor. You can put humor at the top of whatever the situation, to be able to laugh. Our creator has the biggest sense of humor. He’s looking at us and wondering what we are doing with our free will. Go ahead and step in front of that car, do these drugs, try it out, it’s your decision. If number one is having a sense of humor, number two is knowledge. And my belief is that the ultimate tool in knowledge is the truth. So you can go into a situation with a sense of humor and the ultimate tool in the tool shed in your brain, and say, “I’m going to look for truth.” What’s the truth? Constantly answer that question. And it will bubble up. It will come up like spring water. And when the answer finally comes up you will feel relief. The sea sickness will disappear. You will realize the load is shifting. It is not on you anymore. And obviously you have to make a plan after that. So I have a little sense of humor and the tool for the knowledge that I am looking for is a better understanding of truth. Just continue to do that, ask yourself what is the truth, no matter what. And I have to ask myself the same. Maybe one day I’ll say sorry folks, this isn’t working anymore. But I’ve had ten years of soul searching and asking questions and I have discovered that the people that tend to argue with me the most are people like myself, who I used to be. I wanted my own system. I used to say, “Leave me alone, I’m fine. I’ll get beat up, but it’s my system.” Again, walk down to the beach on any given day and look at the ocean, that’s the truth. The truth is here to help you. And if you are getting beat up, ask yourself, “What am I not seeing?” And you’ll see the guides and you can fine tune it. And as you get better and better, you become a better captain. You become aware of the situation. You can walk near a person and think, “I’ve got to stay way from them.” They literally send out vibrations.

What is the ultimate goal for people following your system?

I'd like to take you into a classroom, 100-150 years from now. And the kids are asking the teacher about the old days back in the year 2008 and they were constantly asking, “Why were they having such trouble back then? Why did they abuse the earth so much ? Why did they take oil out and think it was going to get replace? Why were they just so abusive and didn’t recycle?” And the teacher would calmly say, “They just didn’t understand the system of truth. They were walking around and everybody had their own little system of truth. They did whatever they wanted. And now, we understand.” That’s why we have an alphabet and a number system. When you have a standardized system for something, we can then proceed forward. Lets all be in agreement. If you’re in a business meeting, the business is this boat, and it is understood that we are here to make a profit, but part of the way we make a profit is to serve people. You ultimately have to serve people. We all do. And how you serve them is your reward. Today, we could look back 100 years ago, and say, they just didn’t know. It is a progression of the human spirit, the human race. How you go forward and learn. And eventually, hopefully we will embrace the power of truth, because it is very very powerful. It’s an asset. The sun is so powerful because it is going to give us all our needs. The earth and the sun, they are here for us. And we just don’t see it. We think we do, but we must continue to learn.
